From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Earthly Branches (地 🐠 🌷 ; pinyin: dìzhī; Wade–Giles: tichih; Japanese: jishi) are the twelve branches of the Chinese zodiac. They are used in Chinese astrology, Chinese calendrics, and Chinese timekeeping. The Earthly Branches are also used in Chinese feng shui, Chinese medicine, and other Chinese traditional practices.

The Earthly Branches are divided into two groups: the Yang Branches (阳支; yángzhī) and the Yin Branches (阴 🐝 支; yīnzhi). The Yang Branches are associated with the five elements of Chinese astrology: Wood (木; mù), Fire (火; huǒ), Earth (土; tǔ), Metal (金; jīn), and Water (水木金水 🌵 火土; shuǐ). The Yin Branches are associated with the five elements of Chinese astrology as well, but in a different order: Wood (; mù), Metal (; jīn), Water (; shuǐ), Fire (; huǒ), and Earth (; tǔ).

The Earthly Branches are also used to represent the twelve hours of the Chinese day. Each hour is represented by a different Earthly Branch, and the hours are numbered in a clockwise direction. The twelve hours of the Chinese day are:

Rat (子 🕷 ; zǐ; 11 PM–1 AM)

Ox (丑 🌷 ; chǒu; 1–3 AM)

Tiger (寅 🐺 ; yín; 3–5 AM)

Rabbit (卯 🦟 ; mǎo; 5–7 AM)

Dragon (辰 🌷 ; chén; 7–9 AM)

Snake (巳 🐯 ; sì; 9–11 AM)

Horse (午 🐶 ; wǔ; 11 AM–1 PM)

Goat (未 🦈 ; wèi; 1–3 PM)

Monkey (申 🐺 ; shēn; 3–5 PM)

Rooster (酉 🪴 ; yǒu; 5–7 PM)

Dog (戌 🐕 ; xū; 7–9 PM)

Pig (亥 🌷 ; hài; 9–11 PM)

The Earthly Branches are also used to represent the twelve months of the Chinese year. Each month is represented by a different Earthly Branch, and the months are numbered in a clockwise direction. The twelve months of the Chinese year are:

January (子 🐧 ; zǐ)

February (丑 🐈 ; chǒu)

March (寅 🐱 ; yín)

April (卯 🦁 ; mǎo)

May (辰 🪴 ; chén)

June (巳 🌿 ; sì)

July (午 🌿 ; wǔ)

August (未 🐅 ; wèi)

September (申 🐡 ; shēn)

October (酉 🦈 ; yǒu)

November (戌 🕷 ; xū)

December (亥 🐯 ; hài)

The Earthly Branches are used in a variety of ways in Chinese culture. They are used in astrology, calendrics, timekeeping, feng shui, medicine, and other traditional practices. The Earthly Branches are also used in a number of Chinese idioms and proverbs.
